The Research Disconnect {31 for 21 - Tuesday's Teachings}

All information courtesy of the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City:

Down syndrome is the least funded genetic condition by the National Institutes of Health despite being the most frequent chromosomal disorder at 1 in every 691 births. Other disabilities with far less occurrence rate are funded anywhere from three to eleven times more on a per capita basis.

It is critical that parents, Down syndrome associations and physicians continue to educate legislators and the National Institutes for Health about the benefits of basic, clinical, developmental and educational research for people with Down syndrome and their families.

From me:
Provocative new research has the medical & Down syndrome communities buzzing (more info in a future post) & the link between Ds & Alzheimer's is now commonly accepted.  Given these new discoveries, my hope is that more money will be allocated to the scientists specializing in Down syndrome research.  I think the hundreds of thousands of individuals living with Ds would agree.
